Article and Photos by Michael Squance

Frank Lake is a Wetland Conservation Project, South of Calgary, Alberta, near the Village of Blackie. Controlled by Ducks Unlimited Canada for Wildlife management.

It is a series of shallow wetland cells, accessible year round, but restricted to foot access in Fall and Winter. A spacious observation blind provides an excellent sheltered viewing opportunity of abundant migratory birds during the warmer seasons.

Many visitors enjoy viewing the American Pelicans, but my personal favourites are the White - faced Ibis, American Avocets and Marbled Godwits.

It is a wonderful place to meet other photographers to socialize and exchange information on species sightings. Most of my images were captured on my aging Nikon D4s with the Nikkor 80-400mm.
