Photographing Eastern Grey squirrels in a snowstorm can be a beautiful and challenging task.

Here are some tips to help you capture stunning images:

Prepare Your Gear: Make sure you have a weather-sealed camera and lens to protect against snow and moisture. A telephoto lens will help you capture close-up shots of the squirrels without disturbing them. I used a Nikon 200 - 500mm lens on a Nikon D 500 for the photos. Zoom lens is more versatile as they allow you to get different compositions.

Choose the Right Location: Look for areas where Eastern Grey squirrels are known to frequent, such as parks, gardens, or wooded areas. Pay attention to spots with trees or bushes where they might seek shelter during the snowstorm.

The squirrels in the photos to the right were photographed in my backyard in the most recent snowstorm.

Timing: Try to photograph during the snowstorm itself or immediately afterward when the snow is fresh and undisturbed. This will add atmosphere and interest to your photos.

Use Natural Light: Snow can create a bright, reflective environment, so take advantage of natural light. Avoid using a flash as it can create harsh shadows and reflections off the snow. My settings were 1/50 sec at 6.7 f-stop ISO 900 on Auto with an EV setting of +2.

Patience: Squirrels may be more active during snowy weather as they search for food, but they might also seek shelter to stay warm. Be patient and observe their behavior to anticipate the best moments to capture.

Composition:  Look for interesting compositions that incorporate the snowfall, trees, and other elements of the environment. Experiment with different angles and perspectives to add visual interest to your photos.

Focus on Details: Snow can provide a beautiful backdrop for close-up shots of squirrels. Focus on capturing their fur, whiskers, and facial expressions to add personality to your photos.

Keep Warm: Dress warmly and consider bringing hand warmers to keep yourself comfortable during the shoot. This will allow you to stay out longer and capture more photos.

Respect Wildlife: Be mindful of the squirrels' behavior and avoid disturbing them or their habitat. Keep a safe distance and use a telephoto lens to capture close-up shots without getting too close.

Experiment and Have Fun: Don't be afraid to experiment with different techniques and settings to capture unique and creative photos. Enjoy the experience of photographing these fascinating creatures in their winter environment.
